- LIVE RED LOTUS TUBER ROOT (HYBRID): Nelumbo nucifera, family Nelumbonaceae — the Indian lotus. Deep, glowing red blooms. Hand-picked from our own West Bengal nursery and packed the day it ships. Single tuber root.
- BLOOMS IN 30-40 DAYS — IF ALL FOUR OF THESE ARE TRUE: planted March to July, 6+ hours of direct sun daily, water 15-20 cm deep over heavy clay, and a container at least 45 cm wide with NO drainage hole. Miss the sun and you get leaves but no flower. Planted October to February the tuber root stays dormant and flowers the following spring — dormant is not dead.
- EXACT SOIL AND PLANTING METHOD: Fill the tub 15 cm deep with 60% pond or field clay, 30% sieved garden loam, 10% well-rotted cow dung, mixed with water to a thick paste. Never potting mix, cocopeat or compost — they float and rot the tuber root. Lay the tuber root FLAT on the mud, growing tip pointing up and left uncovered, press the swollen segments 2 cm in, weigh the old end with a stone, then add 5 cm of water and raise it to 15-20 cm once floating leaves appear.
- EXACT FEEDING SCHEDULE: No fertiliser for the first 3 weeks — until standing leaves rise above the water there are no roots to take it up, and feeding early rots the tuber. Then one aquatic tablet (NPK 10-14-8) at week 3-4, then two tablets per 45 cm tub every 30 days, March to September only. Push each tablet 8-10 cm into the mud, 10-15 cm from the tuber root. Stop completely October to February.
- WHAT ARRIVES AND WHAT TO DO ON DAY ONE: A lotus tuber is a root, not a leafy plant — it arrives with no leaves and that is correct. One live, dormant lotus tuber with at least one intact growing tip, wrapped in moist packing inside a ventilated, recyclable box. Put it into water the day the box opens.
