The Language of Color in the Garden
GREEN
Green represents renewal, new growth, and freshness, everything a garden naturally
embodies! Green backdrop tones make all other colors pop. Green flowers include ‘Limelight’ hydrangeas, hellebore, chrysanthemums, zinnias, and celosia. Green crops include mustard greens, broccoli,
asparagus, okra, and chives
BLUE/PURPLE
Both blue and purple evoke tranquility, wellness, calmness, and relaxation. Blue and purple flowers include hydrangeas, lavender, and delphiniums. Blue crops include blue corn,
blue kale, and blue potatoes.
PINK
Pink is one of the softest colors and is very popular in gardening. Its softness conveys
a sense of femininity, and in some cases, romanticism. Pink can be both calming
and refreshing, depending on the shade chosen. As a complementary color, it adds
a splash of fun! Pink flowers include ‘Peggy Martin’ rose (my personal favorite), snapdragons, zinnia, and vinca. Pink crops include rhubarb, pink Swiss chard, and pink tomatoes.
